Surviving the 'Summer sweats' while Pregnant or Breastfeeding

Welcome to the warm embrace of Summer. If you're an expecting or new mama, along with the sunny days comes an extra little challenge: sweat central. Pure Mama Skincare gets it – we know pregnant and postpartum skin needs some special TLC. Let's dive into tackling that not-so-talked-about issue and find some solutions together!

WHY EXCESSIVE SWEATING OCCURS DURING PREGNANCY & WHILE BREASTFEEDING.

  1. Hormonal changes: Pregnancy and breastfeeding bring about significant hormonal changes, particularly in estrogen and progesterone levels. These hormonal fluctuations can increase your body's temperature, leading to more sweat production.

  2. Increased blood flow: During pregnancy, blood volume increases to support the growing fetus, causing your body to work harder to cool down, resulting in excessive sweating.

  3. Metabolic rate: Your metabolic rate rises while pregnant or breastfeeding to meet the energy demands of nurturing a new life, contributing to increased body heat and sweat.

TIPS TO MANAGE EXCESSIVE SWEATING DURING SUMMER.

  1. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water to replenish fluids lost through sweating and to regulate body temperature. Lemon ice water is a great way to encourage the fluid uptake plus it helps takes the edge off for those feeling a little nauseous.

  2. Wear breathable clothing: Opt for loose, lightweight, and breathable fabrics like cotton to help air circulate around your body. Go buy yourself some oversize t-shirts and rock them. They'll come in super handy after baby is born, too. Pair them with some super comfy shorts (we recommend the lululemon Align shorts) and you are good to go.

  3. Use a safe antiperspirant: Choose antiperspirants that are free from harmful chemicals, especially alluminium and are safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Your local pharmacy will have a range of aluminium-free deodorants.

  4. Cool showers: Frequent cool showers can help lower your body temperature and provide relief from sweating. Seems obvious but don't shy away from taking a midday shower before your mid afternoon nap ;)

  5. Dietary considerations: Eat cooling foods like fruits and vegetables. Have some chilled fruit ready to go and some ice-blocks in the freezer (do what you got to do). Plus, try to avoid spicy and hot foods that can increase body heat.
